Many people picture cruelty as someone hitting an animal. But most suffering comes from neglect — animals left without food, water, shelter or medical care. Both are wrong, and both can be reported.
Signs of neglect
- Visible ribs, hips and spine; no food or water available
- Animals kept permanently chained or in a tiny cage, without shade or shelter
- Untreated wounds, severe skin disease, overgrown nails, matted fur
- Living in their own waste
- Animals left alone for days
Signs of abuse
- Repeated injuries, limping, fear of a particular person
- Hitting, kicking, throwing or burning an animal
- Organized dog fights, poisoning, deliberate abandonment
Animal hoarding
Someone keeping far more animals than they can care for — often with good intentions, but resulting in illness, starvation and dirty conditions. Hoarding usually needs both animal and human support.
