Caring for a cat or dog after spay/neuter surgery

Rest, a clean wound and no licking: a simple recovery plan for the first 10 days.

Sterilization is a routine surgery, and most animals recover quickly. Good aftercare prevents the most common problems: infection and opened stitches.

  1. The first nightKeep the animal in a quiet, warm, clean place. Anaesthesia can make it wobbly and sleepy. Offer a little water once it is fully awake, and a small meal later if the vet allows.
  2. Stop lickingUse the cone or recovery suit for 7–10 days. Licking can open the wound and cause infection.
  3. Limit activityNo jumping, running or rough play for about 10 days. Short, calm leash walks for dogs.
  4. Check the wound dailyA little redness is normal. Call the vet if you see swelling, discharge, a bad smell, bleeding or an opened wound.
  5. Keep it dryNo baths until the vet says the wound has healed.
  6. Follow-upGo to the check-up or stitch removal appointment if one was given.
Call the vet ifthe animal hasn't eaten after 24 hours, vomits repeatedly, seems in strong pain, or is very lethargic.
