Someone abandoned an animal

Abandoned pets struggle to survive on the street. How to help it right now, and how to document and report the abandonment.

  1. Make it safeAbandoned pets are confused and often run into traffic. Calmly offer water and food, and if it lets you, move it to a secure place.
  2. Check for injuries or illnessUse the "injured" or "sick animal" guides if needed, and see a vet for a check-up and a microchip scan.
  3. Write down what you sawDate, time, place, a description of the person or vehicle, licence plate if safe to note, and photos or video. Do not confront anyone.
  4. Report itAbandoning an animal is a form of cruelty in many places. Use our Report a Concern form — you can stay anonymous and follow the case with a tracking ID.
  5. Find it a futureIf you can foster it for a while, we can help with vet care and finding an adopter. Contact us through the help request below.
