Helping street animals through rain and cold

Simple shelters, dry bedding and extra food can carry street animals through bad weather.

Storms and cold nights are dangerous for street animals, especially kittens, puppies, seniors and sick animals. A few simple actions can save lives.

Build a simple shelter

  • A plastic storage box or a sturdy cardboard box wrapped in plastic, with a small door cut on one side.
  • Raise it off the ground on bricks or a pallet so water can't get in.
  • Fill it with straw — not blankets or towels, which soak up water and freeze.
  • Face the door away from wind and rain.

Food and water

Animals burn more energy staying warm, so a little extra food helps. Check water bowls aren't frozen or overflowing with rain.

Check before you start your car

Cats crawl into engines for warmth. Knock on the hood or honk before starting.

After the storm

Look for animals that are hurt, trapped or separated from their mothers, and use our Help Center if you find one.
