Is adopting a pet right for you? A honest checklist

Time, money, space and the next 10–20 years. Questions to answer before you bring an animal home.

Adoption changes two lives. Most returns happen because the new family wasn't prepared — not because the animal was "bad". Take a few minutes with these questions.

Time

  • Cats and dogs can live 12–20 years. Are you ready for that commitment?
  • Dogs need walks, play and training every day. Cats need daily play and attention too.
  • Who will care for the animal when you travel or work long hours?

Money

  • Food, litter or walks equipment, vaccines, deworming, sterilization and yearly check-ups.
  • An emergency fund for unexpected vet bills.

Home

  • Does your landlord allow pets?
  • Are windows and balconies safe for a cat? Is your yard secure for a dog?
  • Does everyone in the household agree? Anyone with allergies?

Match

Energy level matters more than looks. A calm adult cat may suit a busy professional better than a kitten. An older dog may fit a quiet home perfectly. Tell us about your lifestyle and we'll help you find the right match.

Not ready to adopt?Foster for a few weeks, volunteer, or sponsor an animal's care. Every one of these saves lives too.
